Salicylic Acid: Everything You Need to Know: Part 1

First of all l’d love it if you could take out your phone and follow my TikTok. My username is @skincarebyalex1

Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid that can penetrate deep into the pores to unclog dead skin cells and sebum (oil).

It’s anti-inflammatory, keratolytic, and antibacterial, preventing clogged pores and treating most major acne concerns.

What does it do?

It removes dead skin cells, exfoliates, and increases skin cell turnover, promoting healthier skin.

It also reduces the severity of acne, including closed and open comedones (whiteheads and blackheads).

Studies have found it can be even more effective than benzoyl peroxide for treating acne.

It can also treat hyperpigmentation through its exfoliating and anti-inflammatory effects.

Another study has found that it can also be helpful in treating signs of ageing.

Suitable strengths and forms?

Typically 0.5% to 2%, the latter is mainly used to treat acne. It comes in serums, creams, gels, washes, and more.

How to use it?

I advise you to introduce it into your routine slowly, perhaps one to two times a week, until you can tolerate using it once daily if needed.

How long will it take to see results?

Like all skincare, you should wait one full skin cycle, which is four to six weeks, to start seeing visible results.

Stay tuned for Part Two – product recommendations!
